In 2023, Gunther Eysenbach, MD, MPH, FACMI, publisher and founding editor of JMIR Medical Education, wrote an early and widely cited editorial on the transformative role of ChatGPT and large language models (LLMs) in medical education, and initiated a call for papers on this topic. The Gilson et al paper on the performance of ChatGPT in the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USLME) was the first of its kind, demonstrating the remarkable capabilities of ChatGPT for learning and for mastering complex medical questions (interview with Andrew Taylor, one of the coauthors, on YouTube here). Followed by many other studies examining the use of ChatGPT for medical training and evaluation, JMIR Medical Education has become the go-to journal for authors to publish their LLM-related research in medical education, and for medical educators and students to draw inspiration from tools and innovations developed to tackle new challenges and opportunities created by AI/LLMs. “It is my hope that JMIR Medical Education continues to be the top journal among all education journals by attracting the best original research, reviews and viewpoint papers on the role of LLMs in medical education, but also other new technologies that we are not imagining today,” commented Eysenbach, who passed the editor-in-chief torch to Blake J Lesselroth in 2024.
