The delivery of Power-Up includes a men-only, virtual, group-based model with men as coaches and an NDPP curriculum designed to be attentive to the concerns and needs of men. Virtual DPP is defined as a DPP program delivered remotely as synchronous classes through a videoconferencing platform. The intervention will be delivered virtually to participants recruited through clinical settings and available in English and Spanish.

Participants mentioned that although virtual activities are helpful, the in-person connection was irreplaceable and that virtual activities did not provide the same benefits regarding hands-on experience, on-the-ground perspective, relationship building, and understanding of local needs. One participant pointed out the following:
For me, it lacks elements of the full experience.

Online-Based and Technology-Assisted Psychiatric Education for Trainees: Scoping Review
Interest in a virtual patient as an education tool for psychiatric training emerged in the 2000s and 2010s, and facilitated more immersive learning. Within this period, 2 types of virtual patients were studied: artificial intelligence (AI)-driven virtual patients and rule-based virtual patients. Kenny et al [29] and Pataki et al [30] described the use of an AI-driven virtual patient to simulate an adolescent patient with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (“Justina”).

In 2023, a next-generation, innovative, virtual assessment tool—the Virtual Performance Measure (VPM)—was introduced [6]. The VPM replaced animated figures with human models and combined features of self-report and performance-based tools, creating an outcome measure that could be used remotely. The original studies by the developers have shown cross-sectional validity of the VPM in patients with hip and knee joint osteoarthritis [6,7].

Automated alerts were configured and managed by specialized virtual care nurses at the Isala Virtual Care Center. If required actions were not completed, an automated reminder was sent in the evening. Inactivity for more than 3 consecutive days triggered an alert to the virtual care nurse, who could then take appropriate action, such as sending a personal message, making a phone call, or reviewing the patient’s chart and deciding that no action was necessary.
