There were minimal differences between the fellowship and no fellowship group in procedural volume. However, the fellowship cohort did assist in more oculoplastic and orbit cases (P=.02) and more eyelid laceration cases (P=.02). All other surgical volume categories had no statistical significance between the fellowship and no fellowship groups (Tables S1-S4 in Multimedia Appendix 1).

Within the realm of internal medicine, there are 17 fellowship specialties other than Nephrology [4]. There are 4 advanced fellowships such as Adult Congenital Heart Disease, Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology, and Interventional Pulmonology, which are typically not options for Internal Medicine residents or internists who might consider a nephrology fellowship. Hence, these 4 advanced specialties were not included in our study.

Similarly, most trainees (n=69, 86%) indicated that they would be open to committing at least 1 hour to creating a resource on residency electives and fellowship experience to assist future trainees. On the other hand, most fellows (n=22, 76%) indicated that they would consider writing reflective or educational blog articles to share with other trainees, while only relatively few residents (n=19, 37%) were interested in the idea.

Fellowship programs in radiology are usually 1- or 2-year clinical trainings in a subspecialty area after completion of a 4-year residency program. These fellowships therefore represent an optional sixth and seventh year of clinical training, although this may vary in different countries. Most radiologists trained in the United States complete a fellowship before formally entering practice.
