For this study, we collected the EMRs of 1267 patients with tinnitus who visited the ear, nose, and throat departments of 11 medical institutions in Shanghai, China, from November 2019 to July 2023. The inclusion criteria included (1) tinnitus as the primary complaint and (2) the ability to communicate normally.

The remaining images were classified into 4 disease categories: acute otitis media (AOM), middle ear cholesteatoma (chole), chronic otitis media (COM), and otitis media with effusion (OME). The final diagnoses were based on the judgment of the otolaryngologists who treated the patients. These images were accompanied by patient-specific information, such as age, sex, and chief complaint (eg, fever, otalgia, otorrhea, ear fullness, deafness, facial palsy, dizziness, and tinnitus).

In children, the most common cause of hearing impairment is otitis media with effusion, also known as “glue ear”. Approximately 80% of primary school children in the United States and Europe experience glue ear [2]. In contrast to most forms of adult hearing loss, hearing impairment in children with glue ear fluctuates. Serial testing is often required to detect and manage the condition to mitigate its adverse impact on social development.
