Online crowdfunding can assist entrepreneurs and health educators with limited resources to translate their innovative ideas into solid and appealing content and formats [14,15]. Crowdfunding platforms help individuals transform ideas into fundable and actionable projects [16,17].

Research in broader medical crowdfunding suggests such disparities, but crowdfunding in cancer treatment may differ from other types of crowdfunding, given variations in patient blaming and stigma among different cancers and between cancers and other illnesses and accidents [7,8]. In addition, this study helps to identify how social mechanisms can contribute to racial gaps in cancer crowdfunding and promote greater social equity.

Examples include posts on social media platforms and narratives included in crowdfunding campaigns. The latter is especially relevant for studies of medical financial burden since cancer survivors often use online crowdfunding for financial support and coping with cancer-related financial burden [13,14]. Thus, textual linguistic processing may offer an alternative mechanism to explore LGBTQ+ financial burden inequities.

Go Fund Me is a web-based crowdfunding platform used to raise money for individual campaigns. Though not originally designed to raise medical funds, as of 2021, one-third of all funds raised on Go Fund Me (US $650 million) are designated for covering medical costs [1]. A Disease Identification Algorithm for Medical Crowdfunding Campaigns: Validation Study
One such data source that has gained recent attention is web-based crowdfunding, which has become a popular method that many in the United States use to raise money for medical expenses. As of April 2019, more than US $3 billion was raised for personal medical expenses on Go Fund Me (Go Fund Me Inc)—the largest web-based crowdfunding platform.

In particular, Go Fund Me is the most popular crowdfunding website worldwide in terms of funds raised. As of 2021, one-third of the funds raised by Go Fund Me (approximately US $650 million) are for medical campaigns [2]. In the United States, a staggering 62% of bankruptcies are related to medical costs [3]. The high financial burden of medical expenditures has contributed to the rise of popular crowdfunding sites such as Go Fund Me [4].
