Factors Influencing the Implementation of Digital Advance Care Planning: Qualitative Interview Study
Normalization Process Theory (NPT) is an implementation theory that is used to explain how complex interventions are normalized (ie, deeply embedded into, and used as part of, routine practice) [43-45].
In explaining the different types of “work” that people do in normalizing complex interventions, NPT consists of 4 interlinked primary constructs (Table 1) [46,47].

NPT identifies 4 constructs, namely, coherence, cognitive participation, collective action, and reflexive monitoring, to classify the “human work” around a new practice. Each construct is divided into 4 subconstructs, thus providing 16 checking points for success or failure.

The NPT postcourse evaluative questionnaire comprised of multiple statements with which the NPTs indicated their level of agreement on a 10-point Likert scale. They included topics relating to enjoyment of the program, its effect on teaching skills, and its benefits for teacher learning. The questionnaire concluded with 2 free-text sections inquiring about the greatest perceived benefit of engaging in the program and providing space for further comments.

To gain insight into the challenges of mental health care professionals, we use the normalization process theory (NPT), which helps to understand how new technologies and practices are embedded and integrated into existing work practices [5]. This theory “identifies, characterises and explains mechanisms that have been empirically demonstrated to motivate and shape implementation processes and affect their outcomes” [6].
