Themes and Topics on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in JMIR Dermatology Publications
Despite the disparity, dermatology journals published more articles on topics related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) from 2008 to 2019 compared to other specialties [1]. In the absence of a formal DEI review process, publications risk propagating an incomplete understanding of social determinants of health and their interplay with race/ethnicity, gender identity, sex assignment at birth, and religion [2].

These themes include recruiting underrepresented minority nursing faculty, incorporating DEI into an institution’s mission statement, addressing DEI topics in curriculum, providing leadership, having a DEI strategic plan, developing education, developing data-based interventions, instilling policy change, partnering in outreach, targeting impact on hiring committees, recognizing DEI work, and providing mentorship.
