Disqualifying conditions included resistant hypertension, steroid-dependent asthma or emphysema, cirrhosis or hepatic failure, stage C or D chronic heart failure, stage IV or V chronic kidney disease, and terminal cancer or ongoing chemotherapeutic or radiation therapy. Patients were also excluded if they had other serious medical conditions that would inhibit their ability to self-monitor their blood pressure, such as stroke or dementia.
